Introduction
Hello Mr. Anthony, good morning.
“Good morning to you too. Hope you slept well?”
O Yes I did. Lest I forget, the president will like to have a
chat with you by 2pm this afternoon. Hope you are not too busy and engaged
today?
“No, I can’t be busy for the number one citizen of the
country. I am an ambassador here so I must respect the office of the president
of the nation as well, just as I want my own president to be respected. Its okay
by me. I’ll be at the presidential metropolis by 1:30pm”.
O thank you Mr. Anth. He is looking forward to seeing you by
2. Do have a pleasant day ahead.
That was from the office of the president.
As an ambassador to Singapore, I’ve been brought into favour with
the president. He truly loves my presence that we talk almost every time like
we are related or something.
Truly he has being like a father to me.
When I look at where I started from years back, it puzzles me
to believe that I am the one standing here as an ambassador today.
I can still remember the strong stench of poverty that
categorised my life for years. How I couldn’t secure a job and how I couldn’t
make it despite all my trying. My siblings were better than me in many ways.
They were all established in their different career while I was roaming about
trying to get my credentials to some organisations here or there with nothing
to show for it. Disappointment was just my second name as far as job hunting
was concerned.
I was so lost in thoughts that I didn’t hear my secretary Mr.
Greg walk in.
(Taps on the table) Hello sir.
“O Mr. Greg, you are here? I didn’t see you coming”.
That’s because you are so lost in thoughts sir. Hope all is
well?
“Yes my brother. All is well. I’m just going down memory
lane. I’m simply recounting how my life has been”
But seriously sir, I’ve been meaning to ask you how you got
to such an ambassadorial position seeing how young you are. The last ambassador
to Singapore from your country was 72 years old. It has been like that over
time. You are just 37 and already an ambassador. I mean sir, you are truly
lucky. I wish I can be like you, getting to the peak of my very career in
International Relationship.
I truly want to serve my country in an honest and profitable
way which is why I studied extensively international relationship and I was the
very best in my class and in the school but I’ve not gotten there yet.
Hmmmmmm.
“Mr. Greg, I didn’t start the way you are considering it. I had
my very rough waters. I had storms and raging waves”
Are you for real sir? You mean you went through unpleasant
ordeals in life too? I could literally pass you for some big boy whose father
is highly influential and very connected in the society. I’ve always felt your
family back home were well to do and connected to the government of the day
which is why you were picked as an ambassador, but I must commend your
expertise and management. You are not reckless in terms of spending, and even
the way you carry your family. In the last 30 years, ambassadors that came here
never carried with them their family but you brought your wife and little
children. I must say that you are really a rare gem sir.
“Hmmmmm, it seems so, but many waters as they say have gone
under the bridge. My story was a pathetic one till God came to salvage the
situation for me. I tried to be successful but I failed at it many times till I
had to lean on God to make it work for me in life”.
Sir, I’d really like to hear your story. Can you share it
with me please?
“Hmmmmmmmm it started after I graduated from the university
as a software engineer. I had a good result. I mean a really good result as I
was among the top three with high cumulative grade points in my department. I
was just short of a point from the first otherwise we would have been on the
same merit list. My dream was to become a software guru, working in some big
firms like Google, Microsoft, Apple or even with Sony or LG and their likes.
But I couldn’t even secure a job not to talk of advancing my dreams to such a
height……………
